On 29 September 1944 Corporal Harper and his unit had to advance over 300meters of open ground under heavy enemy fire during an attack on the Depot the Mendicite, Antwerp, Belgium. Endangering their own lives they managed to secure the enemy post. However Corporal Harper was mortally wounded during a heroic solo action and died of his wounds.

John William Harper is buried at the Leopoldsburg War Cemetery, Belgium.
