Action: On 29 September 1944 Corporal Harper and his unit had to advance over 300meters of open ground under heavy enemy fire during an attack on the Depot the Mendicite, Antwerp, Belgium. Endangering their own lives they managed to secure the enemy post. However Corporal Harper was mortally wounded during a heroic solo action and died of his wounds.
Details: Corporal Harper’s Victoria Cross is publicly displayed at The York and Lancaster Regiment Museum in Rotherham, Great Britain.
John William Harper is buried at the Leopoldsburg War Cemetery, Belgium.
