"Ruys" Awarded on: 1946 Action: Citation: "The Dutch mv. "Ruys" performed exceptionally good work in the Mediterranean. She was engaged in the Sicilian operations conveying troops from Alexandria. Despite many difficulties all the troops on board were safely landed by the ship's own boats. Previously when the ship was sailing in the Middle East in convoy, the convoy was attacked of Philippeville by a large number of enemy aircraft. It was on this occaision that the Dutch m.v. "Marnix van St. Aldegonde" was torpedoed. During the attack the m.v. "Ruys" was singled out by an enemy torpedo bomber, but a magnificent defence was put up by the ship, and the aircraft was fought off and probably destroyed. The ship then stood by the "Marnix van St. Aldegonde", and, lowering all boats, succeeded in rescuing about 1,200 troops in spite of the proximity of enemy aircraft and submarines. Many of the officers and men of the m.v. "Ruys" did magnificent work on this occasion, but the most outstanding of them was second officer Scheybeler. He was in charge of a motor boat, and was instrumental in saving many hundreds of lives."
