Richard Atcherley and his twin David were born on 12 January 1904 as the sons of Llewelyn Atcherley, retired major. The twins attended the Oundle School in Northamptonshire.

In 1922, Richard Atcherley attended the RAF College Cranwell. After his commission after two years he was placed with No. 29 Squadron. In 1925 he attended the Central Flying School and became also a flying instructor. Here he was selected in 1927 to fly in the schools arobatic team. In 1929 he was selected as a pilot for the Schneider Trophy team and acted in several flying competitions and displays after that.
