BIOGRAPHY: 
Günter Werner Schmidt is the son of Generalleutnant Kurt Schmidt.

Günter-Werner Schmidt was born in 1920 in Frankfurt am Main. In 1938 he entered the Reichsarbeitsdienst at the age of 18, after which he entered the Kriegsmarine on 1st October 1938.
His basic training was between October 1938 and February 1939 at Stralsund with Crew 38 "Grossdeutschland".
This unit received its training at sea on the S.S.S. Gorch Fock. From July until 15th October 1939 he held his trainingcruise on board the S.M.S. Schlesien, on which he also entered the invasion of Poland.
He was promoted to Fähnrich in the autumn of 1939.
Round 1943 Günter-Werne Schmidt became Oberleutnant zur See and commanded several ships in the 22.U-Jagdflottille.
Here he commanded UJ2207, UJ2208, UJ2209, UJ2216, UJ2226 and UJ2227.
Günter-Werner Schmidt was the last commander of the UJ2227 when he and his unit surrendered to the 92nd American Infantry Division.
A month later, on 24th May, the German prisoners were transferred to the British and Günter-Werner ended in the 226.P.O.W. Camp.
Two years later, in June 1947, he discribed his last war days to the British Army.
