He attended the Naval Academy and rose to the rank of Rear Admiral over his 43 year career in the navy. During the Second World War he served in the Pacific. Among his commands were: Commander of Naval Forces in the Philippine Islands during the Vietnam War as well as Commander of the Sixth Naval District stationed in Charleston, South Carolina.
