On 25 September 1943, a company from the 3rd. Coldstream Guards came under heavy enemy fire when they stormed a hill near Salerno, Italy. Because most allied officers became casualties, Company Sergeant-Major Wright took command. He personally managed to put three enemy machine-gun posts out of action. When the enemy carried out a counter attack he managed to beat off the counter attack and consolidated his position.
