Action: On 22 September 1943 Lieutenant Place, commander of the mini submarine X.7, with Lieutenant Cameron, commander of the mini submarine X.6, carried out a dangerous but successful attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in the bay of Kaafjord in Norway. The two mini submarines could eventually after a travel of 1600 kilometers and past some German strongpoint, placed their explosives on the lower part of the Tirplitz. As a result the Tirplitz was out of battle for several months.
Details: Later promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral.
