During an attack on an enemy position on 31 August 1944, Lieutenant Norton’s platoon came under heavy enemy fire near Monte Gidolfo, Italy. After judging this awkward situation Lieutenant Norton stormed forwards alone and managed to put an enemy machine-gun post out of action. During a follow-up attack on two other machine-gun posts he eventually managed to put them out of action and to take some prisoners of war. During these actions Lieutenant Nicholson constantly operated under heavy enemy fire. His heroic actions saved his platoon.
