After judging this awkward situation Lieutenant Norton stormed forwards alone and managed to put an enemy machine-gun post out of action. During a follow-up attack on two other machine-gun posts he eventually managed to put them out of action and to take some prisoners of war. During these actions Lieutenant Nicholson constantly operated under heavy enemy fire. His heroic actions saved his platoon.
