"This officer displayed great gallantry and a total disregard of his own safety when the aircraft of which he was the pilot was shot down by an enemy fighter in September, 1939, and crashed in flames. Though badly burned, he pulled his wounded air observer from the wreckage to a place of safety and then returned to rescue the air gunner. He found the airman dead, however, and was unable to lift him from the cockpit."
Details: Was permitted to keep the EGM beceause he earned it during action for his country, but was not allowed to wear it after receiving the George Cross.

Action: Received award for for his help by an air crash rescue in Great Britain in September 1939.Exchanged with the EGM.
Details: Date of Gazette 11 November 1939.
Received the Empire Gallantry Medal for his deed, but was allowed to exchange his award for the George Cross after 24 September 1940.
Later promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader.
Reginald Graveley's medals are on display in the Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon, Great Britain.
